This is the Seat Altea, it was broke into for the valuables inside the car.

windscreen-replacement-southport 1

On this blog I am going to show you how to strip down the door card and how the glass is fit to the Seat Altea.

Ok lets start with the door card.

windscreen-replacement-lancashire 2

This is the door card for the Seat, The Seat has a tricky method for getting at the door mechanism. Keep reading below all will be revealed.

Taking off the door handle.

windscreen-replacement-burnley 3

Gently ease off the outer plastic cover.

Screws behind the cover

windscreen-replacement-chorley 4

Ok now we have gently removed the plastic outer cover there are two torx screws to remove.

Down to the speaker cover.

windscreen-replacement-bolton 5

Now its time to remove this speaker cover again being very gentle ease out the cover using a plastic tool.

Screws behind the cover

windscreen-replacement-liverpool 6

Now the cover as been removed we can see the speaker, around the speaker there are a series of torx screws, remove them.

Speaker plug.

windscreen-replacement-manchester 7

Now the speaker is free we can disconnect the plug from the speaker, just squeeze the two little prongs at either side of the plug.

More torx screws.

windscreen-replacement-wigan 8

Ok we have removed the speaker, behind the speaker are three more torx screws.

The tricky bit.

windscreen-replacement-blackburn 9

This is where Seat made life so much easier for windscreen fitters. Normally we would need to remove the whole door panel, not with Seat all we remove is the centre of the panel. Look at the picture you can see I am using a plastic tool to gently ease off the centre panel.

The centre panel is off.

windscreen-replacement-preston 10

Its off you can see the plastic retainers that hold the centre panel on.

Door glass plug

windscreen-replacement-lancaster 11

Now the centre panel is off we can disconnect the plug for the door glass.

Door mechanism exposed.

windscreen-replacement-blackpool 12

There it is the clamp that holds the glass in place there are two clamps.

How we finish the job.

blackpool windscreens

The two clamp that hold the door glass in place have nuts that clamp together when tightened. Slacken off the clamps and remove any glass you don’t need to remove the nuts completely. Vac out any glass that might be in the bottom off the door, slide the new door glass in and tighten up the nuts, reconnect the electrics for the door mecho and take the glass up and down, you are looking for ease of movement up and down and if there might be any glass left in the felts. Now make sure the one press switch function is working ok. That’s it job done just rebuild the door panel.

Leaking Mondeo windscreen in Blackpool.

Yesterday Mr Chip Windscreens did a windscreen replacement on a Ford Mondeo in Blackpool. The first thing we do before we start any job is check the vehicle  inside and out for any damage. On our check we noticed a big clump of glue on the roof aperture and glue on the head lining, so we got the customer to come and check it out, he was shocked at what he was looking at. I asked the customer if the windscreen leaked in that point he said yes it did and he took it to the main Ford dealer to get it sorted out. Well here is their sorting out, what a mess.

Picture 1 is the clump of glue on the roof aperture

car-window-screen-blackpool

What a mess somebody pulled the head lining down and squeezed a thick line of windscreen glue where they thought the windscreen was leaking. Plus they have got glue all over the head lining.

Picture 2 shows where the water was leaking in.

leaking-windscreen

Why did the windscreen leak in water at this point. In the picture you can see me pulling the heated windscreen wires back, the glue did not adhere to the heated windscreen elements plus the elements wasn’t stuck to the windscreen which caused the windscreen to leak.

So what does the windscreen elements look like.

windscreen-in-blackpool

This is a picture of the top of a Ford Mondeo windscreen. As you can see the elements go from the top outside edge, over the black band and in the car where the heated windscreen is earthed. This is what as happened to our leaking Mondeo windscreen, the strips of elements that go across the black band was not primed and the heated elements was not stuck to the windscreen all of which would cause the Mondeo windscreen to leak.

A car window screen replacement no a Fiat 500 in Blackpool.

This is how we replace the door glass for a Fiat 500 in Blackpool.

windscreen-in-bolton

This is a very easy straight forward job so I thought I might show you how its done. This Fiat 500 was broken into by car thieves they got away with a lap top and an handbag, so never leave anything on show in your cars because they will get stolen.

This picture shows where and how the car thieves got into the Fiat 500.

Fiat-500-door-glass-in-Blackpool - Copy

So here we have a closer look at the passenger or N/S Door frame. Look at the arrow pointing at the circle well that’s where our friendly car thieves stuck some sort of lever tool in there maybe a screwdriver or something similar, they give it a yank and pop goes the car door glass but as you can see the door frame is left with a nasty bent door.

Lets take a look inside the car.

windscreen-in-Blackpool

Ok open the door and check for any damage such as damaged seats or trims. Next we need to get all that broken toughened glass out, I hate this job but its got to be done, the glass gets everywhere so just get stuck in go under the seats and everywhere. More often than not some of the broken glass is stuck in the weather strip which the car window glass fits into, we need all that glass out before the new glass goes in.

These next series of pictures are of the door panel strip down.

car-glass-in-preston

Remove this chrome cover on the door lever, just get a lever tool and gently ease it out going round the whole cover.

windscreen-in-liverpool

Where you pull the door to shut it you will see this small cover, again gently ease it out with a small lever tool. never use excessive force when removing plastic parts.

windscreen-in-fleetwood

Now the small plastic cover has been removed  we can see two alan key nuts just take them out.

windscreen-in-kendal

Ok we now have the door panel off but the cable that operates the door opener needs to be removed. The white plastic bit in my fingers needs to be gently eased out from its housing, next there is a small black swivel click which once again we gently pull it away from the cable. Now we can remove the cable from the door panel.

windscreen-in-blackburn

Ok the panel has been removed now we need to remove the membrane, the membrane protects the door panel from any moisture which come in from rain. Be very careful while removing the membrane it can split very easily.

windscreen-in-manchester

When a car window glass has been smashed lots of broken glass falls inside the door,  we need to vac it out, give the door a good shake get right in there.

windscreen-in-burnley

Now we drop the window mechanism so we can clear it of any glass and make enough room to fit the new car glass into the door. The white plastic part you can see is where the door glass sits, there is a plastic locating pin which goes through an hole in the new door glass.

windscreen-in-chorley

This is the hole in the new car window screen. Once the glass is located on the white clip the door glass will go up and down as required.

windscreen-in-lancashire

On the new car glass a plastic guide is attached, this plastic guide slots into the back door rubber weather strip, its there to stop the door glass falling forward when going up or down and to allow a smooth operation.

Time for the rebuild.

windscreen-in-lancaster

Ok lets put the thing back together. The red plastic clip you can see holds the door panel onto the door, there are a series of these clips all the way around the door panel just line them up and push them home. Now just follow the above instructions and rebuild your door panel.

windscreen-in-darwin

That’s it job done and dusted all there is left to do is check the door glass is going up and down with no problems.

My new A wire windscreen cut out tool.

IMG_1291 (2)

Well I finally got my hands on one of these A wire windscreen removal tools. What a brilliant bit of kit, the idea is to remove a windscreen using the A wire and razor wire. Look at the picture the A wire is stuck to the inside of the windscreen. The cheese wire goes all the way round the outside of the widow screen and in at the bottom corner. We attach the wire to the A wire then turn the handle and that pulls the wire through the windscreen glue. A massive beware, guard protectors must be used at all times so to prevent damage to inner trims. Why do we need this type of tool, well the vehicle manufacturers are looking at a more streamlined look for the windscreen a sleeker look, so that means no trims which mean the windscreen just sits on the aperture of the car and in some cases the gap between the edge of the windshield and the car body is very tight. With normal cut out tools you would scratch the cars paint work so we go from the outside in using cheese wire.

This is a contaminated windscreen repair.

IMG_1125 (2)IMG_1129 (2)

This is what happens to a windscreen repair if it’s left without repair. Picture 1 is the stone chip before repair. Picture 2 is the repaired chip. Ok look at picture 1 and you can see a white shadow, the shadow is caused by moisture entering the stone chip and attacking the plastic interlayer which is between the two layers of glass which makes up the windscreen. Over time the interlayer turns this milky white colour and it’s permanent. Look at picture two that is the finished repair, yes the windscreen repair is fixed but that white shadow is still there. To prevent this happening get those chip fixed ASAP.

This is how we fix a rain sensor.

008-2.jpg001-2.jpg

This is how we fix a rain sensor. Picture 1 shows you the bracket which the rain sensor attaches to on the windscreen. In the middle of the bracket you can see the old gel off the rain sensor it’s stuck on the old windscreen. Some people try and get the old gel off and stick it on the rain sensor but that never looks right and it doesn’t work right. We use this liquid shown in picture 2. First thing is to put the sensor on a perfectly level surface, there are tools out there which help with this procedure, then slowly extrude the liquid on to the sensor, use the full amount in the chambers. That’s it, leave for 10 minutes and its dry enough, now fix on to the windscreen, good as new.
